Identity is a complex and multifaceted construct. In this lecture, Dr. Carmen Crosby will explore ways that the context of culture creates inherent power dynamics, which influence actual and perceived power within the therapeutic alliance. Dr. Crosby will encourage us to deepen our therapeutic work by considering specific elements of identity affecting our clients and ourselves. Finally, Dr. Crosby will present ways to leverage power imbalances in session, illustrating the applications of this approach with examples from work with survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault.
