Partnering with the UNC Center for Maternal and Infant Health, the Jordan Institute is convening activists, clinicians, lawyers, law enforcement, social workers, public health leaders, community programs, judges and people with lived experience to take on this challenging and important issue. Key areas of focus include: keeping pregnant / new mothers with low offenses out of jails and prisons (especially women who can’t afford bail), improving conditions while incarcerated, addressing birth justice issues for birthing people, implementing evidence-based programs to foster mother/baby bonding and breastfeeding, and support for transitioning back to the community.
