The term “family” is used inclusively.

It is defined as a basic social unit that emerges when two or more individuals commit to sharing the responsibilities and functions of fulfilling one another’s biological, social, economic and psychological needs.

The Jordan Institute for Families’ vision is to ensure that all families have the support they need to thrive. We focus on strengthening families, communities and the workforce who serves them. In alignment with the UNC School of Social Work – our home base – JIF is committed to advancing equity, transforming systems and improving the lives of families in and beyond North Carolina.

Many organizations have benefited from the Institute’s consultation, training, technical assistance, and capacity to build partnerships and coalitions. For example, beginning in Fall 2024, the Jordan Institute has consulted with The Duke Endowment in convening an advisory group and creating a multi-year, multi-million dollar investment to improve the health of new families in North and South Carolina. Whether shining a light on the challenges and joys of caregiving, building the capacity of emerging and experienced human service industry leaders or advancing policies and practices to better support well-being, the Jordan Institute works to strengthen families across generations.

Our purpose and vision are guided by the following core objectives:

Identify and build awareness around systemic challenges and needs of family serving systems and the people who work in them.

Serve as a convening and collaborative force that brings people together and inspires action.

Establish the training, partnerships and skill building resources required to create and sustain change.
